A study examining the peripheral blood transcripts in patients with cancer, autoimmune disease, immunodeficiency or iatrogenic immune suppression.

Professor Julia Newton-Bishop
Principal Investigator
What do we do?

Our research group has a strong background in Melanoma (skin cancer) research. We are interested in how the immune system interacts with cancer such as melanoma, but also in other diseases where the immune system acts differently, such as autoimmune disease where it is 'over-active' and after an organ transplant where the immune system is suppressed with anti-rejection drugs.

Our aim is to develop a blood test of immune system behaviour through looking at the activity of genes in the blood, known as the Peripheral Blood Transcriptome.

We will collect blood samples from patients who have cancer, auto-immune illnesses and organ transplants as well as healthy people. Doing this will help us develop the test.

Can you help us?

We are recruiting healthy volunteers to donate a blood sample, answer a brief questionnaire and have their blood pressure, height, weight, hip and waist measurements taken.
You could help us if you are:
-
Aged 18-66 (70 if have previously given blood)

Unfortunately we are unable to recruit people to this study who:
-
Have suffered with cancer in the last 5 years
-
Have an auto-immune disease (such as Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis)
-
Have diabetes
-
Have significant cardiovascular disease
-
Have any infectious illness such as TB, Hepatitis or HIV
